Bus Transportation Update
August 10, 2017
As we get ever so close to the start of the 2017-18 school year, we wanted to give everyone an update on the bus driver situation.
We are pleased to report that Bill Rathmann, Denis Lakenburges, Gerard Albers, and Frank Schroeder will be returning as bus drivers for the school district. We are fortunate to have such a strong core group of bus drivers on our team. Their dedication to safely transporting our students is very much appreciated. If you happen to see them out and about in the community, please thank them for their continued commitment to the job.
Randy Gerling has been hired as the new transportation director. He is in the process of getting licensed to drive bus. Once he is licensed, he will take over the routes Keith Knobeloch previously drove. Hopefully, we will be able to work Randy into the driving rotation within the next two weeks.
While Keith Knobeloch will not be driving for us regularly, he is still a big part of our team. He is helping Randy with his transition into the transportation director position while also training him on driving the bus. Keith will serve as a substitute bus driver for us this year and will likely be the driver for most field trips. Keith continues to be the ultimate team player willing to help out as needed. We cannot thank him enough for all of his help during this period of transition.
Carl Diesen has graciously agreed to get licensed to drive bus for us as well. He will hopefully be available to drive in a substitute role starting sometime in September.
Next week, we are short-handed where bus drivers are concerned. On our first day of school, Wednesday, August 16, we only have two bus drivers available for the 1:40 route. Frank Schroeder will depart school at approximately 1:45 and drive his regular route which transports students to the Bartelso bottoms area of our school district. Denis Lakenburges will depart from school around 1:45 with students that live in the north end of town (Keith’s old route). Then, he will come back to school after completing that route, at approximately 2:20, and pick up the students that live on the western edge of the school district which includes stops on Route 161 westbound and Woodlane Road. At dismissal, the students on this route will report to the gym where they will be supervised until Denis comes to pick them up to take them home. Homeroom teachers will clearly explain this situation to the students prior to dismissal next Wednesday to ensure that everyone gets safely to where they need to go.
Next week’s Thursday and Friday routes are fully staffed, so at this point in time, all routes those days are scheduled to run as usual.
Once Carl and Randy are licensed, we should have the manpower needed to carry out all routes as scheduled. Until then, please be patient with us as we make our way through this transition period. We will notify you in advance if at any point in time changes need to be made to routes.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions, feel free to call the school office at 523-4253.
