Lady Bulldogs 2nd in State-1st in Our Hearts
With a 42-15 victory over Olney-St. Joe in the semi-finals, the Lady Bulldogs earned a trip to the Class S State championship game. The championship game was an all Clinton County match-up, with Germantown taking on the Bartelso Braves, a perennial power. The game proved to be a battle from start to finish with the teams exchanging leads throughout. Bartelso led 9-6 after the first quarter. Germantown secured a slim lead at half, 16-15. Bartelso regained the advantage after three quarters, 27-24. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. The Braves were able to fend off the intense defensive effort of the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to pull off a 31-28 victory. Both teams played a hard fought game and deserve credit for representing Clinton County with pride. Congratulations to the Lady Bulldogs for a great season. We are proud of you!
Lady Bulldogs Regional Champs
Head coach, Gerard Albers, is taking Germantown's girls basketball team to a place he took the school's boys basketball team four times -- the Class S State Tournament. Katie H. and Erica H. each scored a game-high 10 points as the Bulldogs pulled away from Albers-Damiansville in the second half of a 34-25 victory Friday night in the title game of the Region 5 regional before a packed house at All Saints Academy. The Lady Bulldogs have made several trips to the state tournament at Rend Lake College in Ina, but this is the first under Albers, a longtime coach on the boys' side at Germantown. "The euphoria of taking a team to state doesn't get old," Albers said. "It feels just the same," said Albers, who won two state titles as coach of Germantown's boys team. "In fact, I was just as nervous if not more today than I was for the boys. The girls did a great job. They've been getting better and better as the season has progressed." Germantown will face the Region 7 regional winner at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, in the opening round at Rend Lake College.
Leading 11-10 at halftime, the Bulldogs outscored Albers-Damiansville 12-4 in the third quarter to open up a 23-14 advantage. Katie H. keyed the spurt with three 3-pointers as her long-range marksmanship deflated the Cougars. The Bulldogs sank 9-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Cougars at arm's length.
