Germantown Elementary 5th and 6th grade Team Quest participants placed 1st at the Team Quest finals held recently in Chester, Illinois. Team members are 5th graders Ben and Claire and 6th graders Hannah and Hayley.
‘The Pursuit of Liberty’ was the theme for this years Team Quest finals, an academic competition with categories in trivia, math, music, history/social studies, engineering, and creative challenges. The activities focused on Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I and a little of World War II.
There was a ‘Cooks Tent’ set up complete with an old fashioned cooking pot and fire. The cook was ‘Mary’ a camp-follower who told about how General Washington didn’t necessarily care for the camp followers, but he allowed them. If the students wanted to they were able to try rabbit stew, creamed beef and hardtack.
For the engineering part of the competition, the team had to create a canon that could hold four cannon balls of various weights-two heavyweights and two light weights. The canon couldn’t touch the ground and quicker you were loading the cannonballs into the canon, the more points you received. The team was able to load their canon in just under five seconds.
The creative project included making a spy vehicle. They chose their vehicles by pulling out a paper from a jar, and they chose aquarium. The spy vehicle had to have necessities you would need because you would be in it all day running around, if it were a real spy vehicle. The team created a colorful fishmobile complete with camera monitor, big screen television, couch, refrigerator, and port-a-potty.
